Modified-SHIRPA

Modified-SHIRPA is a comprehensive, standardized, and high-throughput protocol and is compatible with the original ‘‘SHIRPA’’protocol. The detailed version of the original SHIRPA protocol can be found on the webpage of Howell, MRC: http://empress.har.mrc.ac.uk/browser/?sop_id=10_002_0.

Modified-SHIRPA involved 42 tests (33 behavioral observations, 7 metabolic or disease observations and 2 additional comments on behavior arena protocol) and 16 new criteria of morphologic appearance that were designed to screen for developmental and metabolic anomalies. Modified-SHIRPA consists of a total of 58 subtests. Behavioral observations include gait, balance, various reflection assays, and startle response. All behaviors are scored to provide a semi-quantitative assessment of each parameter. It gives a rough behavioral profile of the animal. It also provides indications about specific behavioral anomalies resulting from muscular, lower motor neuronal, spinocerebellar, sensory and autonomic defects.
