Introduction
Direction of Migration:
The facilities of TMC animal hotel is designed as follows.
● | The design of building materials
1. | Non-creviced plastic flooring - TMC uses non-creviced plastic flooring to build floors in animal rooms and hallways in order to avoid dust gathering, to resist corrosion from disinfectants as well as to simplify further internal maintenance.
2. | Sealed lamp covers - sealed lamp covers are used on the ceiling lamps to prevent contamination from surroundings, to facilitate maintenance and to keep operations regular in mouse hotel. |
|
3. | Stainless steel materials –all shelves and walls inside of mouse hotel are made of stainless steel materials to against corrosion from disinfectants. All edges of equipments and corners are sealed by silica gel, and corners are designed as R-angles to prevent dust contamination.
● | Barrier of airflow: | |
1. | HEPA filter (High Efficiency Particulate Air filter) - air in animal rooms is filtered by 99.97% HEPA filter to get rid of all pathogens. TMC uses an air circulatory system which can recycle air in external and internal areas to maintain a thermostable environment.
2. | IVC (Individually ventilated cage) cart, ALTERNATIVE DESIGN, USA - the IVC system provides fully protection on mice with filtered air supplied by 99.99% of the HEPA high efficiency filter, minor positive pressure of +1pa in mouse's cage, and exchanged air rate of 50±1 times per hour to prevent cross infection by airborne pathogens among cages.
3. | ESCO Dual Access Animal Containment Workstation- a changing station is provided in every animal room for renewing bedding and food, or performing experiments. Air supplied inside of the changing station is filtered through 99.99% of the HEPA high efficiency filter to avoid transmission of pathogens.
4. | Positive pressure difference – to prevent invasion of pathogens from air and cross infection among animal rooms, pressure gradient is monitored in all areas inside of mouse hotel such as pressures in mouse room, passage, buffer zone and atmosphere are +20pa, +15pa, +10pa, +0pa, respectively. Air in the animal room is flown toward one direction.
5. | Air-sealed doors - all doors of animal rooms are air-sealed which can enhance insulation and provide the barrier of pressure gradient in order to avoid cross infection through air.
6. | Air Shower - this device is set up in the entrance of animal hotel for blowing out dust and particles from staffs.
● | Security and monitoring systems:
TMC utilizes multiple security systems to secure the environment and systems of TMC mouse hotel to be stable. The systems include three apparatus listed as follows.
1. | Monitoring systems for environment- constant temperature of 22℃(±2℃), humidity of 60% (±10%), gradient pressure, regular photoperiod for 12hrs and high exchanged air rate are maintained in TMC mouse hotel to keep the environment of experimental animals comfortable. As long as temperature or pressure shows abnormal, this system will send a warning notice to administrators immediately. |
|
2. | Video monitoring systems - in order to monitor the instant situation of personnel and environment, video monitoring systems are settled in mouse hotel widely.
3. | Security entrance systems - the security gates for mouse hotel and rooms are used to record any information.
● | Regular Monitoring on mice and surroundings :
1. | Health monitoring - TMC mouse hotel provides equipments with SPF grade for husbandry services. All mice approved to stay in mouse hotel should be 12 pathogens free. In addition, TMC uses ELISA method to inspect 12 pathogens on sentinel mice for the health monitoring every quarter.
2. | Monitoring for bacteria in air- TMC examines the count of bacterial colonies on blood agar plates every month to quantitate pathogenic bacteria amount in air and to confirm the efficiencies of HEPA filters.
3. | Monitoring for water quality and bacteria in RO water - drinking water for animal is inspected every day. TMC also check bacteria count in RO water every month to make sure the quality of RO water. |
